Jesus said the gospel of the kingdom must be preached in all nations before the end comes. The gospel of the kingdom is more than the gospel of salvation, though salvation is at its heart. It declares that Jesus is King, His reign has been inaugurated, His kingdom is advancing through the Spirit-empowered church, and one day He will return to rule over all the earth. To understand the gospel of the kingdom, we must look at Jesus’s ministry in the Gospels, where He embodied, proclaimed, and demonstrated the kingdom through teaching, preaching, healing, deliverance, and miracles. The apostles continued this same kingdom ministry after His resurrection and ascension, carrying forward both the message and power of the kingdom. The gospel of the kingdom calls for immediate allegiance to Jesus’s lordship, inward transformation by the indwelling Spirit, kingdom living, the demonstration of Holy Spirit power, and the proclamation that the kingdom is coming in fullness. It is not merely a message about going to heaven when we die, forgiveness without lordship, or salvation without transformation. It is the announcement that Jesus is King and that every person, family, city, and nation must come under His reign. If we long for the return of the King, then the church must recover the full gospel of the kingdom—preaching what Jesus preached, demonstrating what Jesus demonstrated, and preparing the nations for the coming reign of Christ.
