The kingdom of God is not confined to a single moment in history. It is part of a much larger story—one that began in the eternal heart of God, unfolded through His promises, entered the world through Jesus, and continues moving toward its ultimate fulfillment. Seeing this broader picture helps us understand where we are in God’s plan and how we are called to live within it.
Without that perspective, we can easily emphasize one aspect of the kingdom while overlooking others. Some focus almost entirely on what God will do in the future, while others speak as though every promise of the kingdom should already be experienced in its fullness. Scripture invites us to embrace both the reality of what Christ has already accomplished and the hope of what will be completed when He returns.
In this article, I explore:
- How the kingdom is connected to God’s eternal purpose
- What the Old Testament prophets promised about the coming King
- How Jesus inaugurated the kingdom through His life and ministry
- How the Holy Spirit empowers the church to express Christ’s reign today
- Why the kingdom is both a present reality and a future hope
- How the five phases help us understand the already and not yet of God’s kingdom
Understanding these five phases gives us a fuller and more balanced vision of the kingdom of God. It calls us to recognize what the King is doing now, participate faithfully in His purposes, and live with confident expectation for the day when His reign is openly established throughout the earth.
